Blogs are Good for Business, says Bill Gates

Okay…

You heard it here first folks.

Bill Gates gives his blessing…Blogging will be popular.

Thanks Bill. Seriously…

There’s a reason Bill Gates announced this…because it’s true.

Blogging is not just for kids. Businesses are now recognizing it’s significance. (MJS Web Solutions included).

The major benefit of blogging is keeping your website up to date, fresh and new. No one likes a dead website - your visitors or the search engines. Keep it alive with a blog.

Use it for:

  1. News/Press Releases
  2. Online Articles
  3. Product or Service Announcements
Blogging is revolutionizing how we communicate (and market) on the web.

Email was a “permission marketing” tool. Now its become an “interruption marketing” device with all the spam and viruses. Who wants to be interrupted? Not me. With a blog, your audience chooses to come to you.

With a blog, you can ask your audience to leave comments, suggestions or questions in response to your blogs. Other blogs can link together to form a blog community. These online communities would share the same theme or cause, giving visitors more in depth information.

Blogging (or a form of) may replace email. Until we can fix email, with all it’s spam and viruses, blogging looks like it’ll be here to stay.

MJS Web Solutions can setup a blog for your website. Call (510) 523-7312 or email us.

Give and You’ll Receive

Hope you had a great weekend.

After returning from breakfast on Sunday morning, I spotted an injured bird, on the side of the road, outside of our home. I parked, picked up the bird and put him in the bed of my pickup truck - so he wouldn’t get run over.

I rushed in the house and called the Alameda Animal Shelter. Not there on Sundays. I called the police who suggested I call the Ohlone Humane Society Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. I did.

Unfortunately they were located in Newark - about a half hour away.

I tried the local vets here in town first. No one was open on Sunday, except one. They said they couldn’t rescue the bird, but could euthanize it. Not my first choice, but it was better than having it suffer to death.

After arriving I come to find out the vet wanted $20.00 to euthanize the bird. I refused. $20.00 to kill a bird. No way! My wallet and heart were not in the right place.

It looks like I was headed to Newark.

I called the OHS Wildlife Rehabilitation Center again and asked if it would cost anything to drop off the bird. “No”, they said, “but we gladly accept donations.” They also mentioned, they’d try to rescue the bird, but if they were unsuccessful, they would have to put him down. That was fine, I thought. That’s better than paying $20.00 just to kill it.

I arrived at the shelter. Linda and Paul, both volunteers, gladly took the bird into their care. I was given a tour of the facility. The rescue center is funded all by donations and volunteers. They rescue almost every type of animal, except skunks and deer.

After my tour, I filled out some paperwork and gladly offered my donation of $20.00 to the shelter.

(…and the point is?…I like to at least have a point to these writings…)

Give and you’ll receive. I gave my money of my own good free will. Giving your money because you want to feels a whole lot better than having it taken away or demanded from you. I felt obliged to give my money. When the vet demanded my money, I was taken back, but the idea of giving it felt better and I knew where my money was going.

Give stuff away for FREE on your website - articles, free product samples, etc. That is what the Internet is still about – getting information for free. While offering FREE items or information, you’re also positioning yourself as the expert. And who better qualified than your organization.

How Can I Improve My Website?

I was asked this question today. I like these questions. It gives me a chance to show off my expertise and at the same time help educate others about good web design.

Having visited his website earlier, I mentioned a few things I thought would help. I wanted to share my suggestions…

  1. Make sure your navigation menu is near the top of the page. It can be very frustrating for your visitors to have to scroll down each time to navigate through your website. Each irritation a visitor has can lead to non-returning visitors, or worse, non-inquiring visitors.
  2. Make sure all your important information is at the top of the page and all the less important or not as important information at the bottom. If you need to say something important, keep it near the top where your visitors can see it immediately. (Search Engines follow these guidelines too)
  3. If you have a multiple-menu navigation system, make sure each sub-menu is clearly identified. Choose to indent, create a drop-down, choose a different color or add a smaller font. If each sub-menu looks or is located in the same place as your main menu, you could be confusing your visitors.
Remember, your visitors want to know where they are, where they can go, and where they’ve been.

’til next time.

Google Gone IPO

I had to put my two cents in…

Google going IPO is big stuff folks. Search Engines have hit the big league.

It’s now even more important we pay attention to this ever changing industry. I mean…the main reason why we go online is to find information. How do you find it? Search for it.

It’s also important because MSN and Yahoo are creating their own search engine systems to compete with Google. It’s become big business. Big in the sense of pin-pointing exactly what we’re trying to find - the relevancy of the search. Most of my searches still turn up a bunch of junk. The goal of all search engines will be to remove the ‘noise’ associated with a search and give us exactly what we’re looking for.

This kind of accuracy will define who wins in the Search Engine wars and so far Google has the upper hand.

Good luck and may the best engine win.

Keywords and Your Website

If you want more traffic to your website, it’s critical your website contains keywords. Keywords are terms or phrases users type into their favorite search engines to find your website.

Find out how often people search for a certain term or keyword in the search engines. And what other words people type in that are associated with that particular keyword.

http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/suggestion/

Just type in a term or keyword and check out its ranking. So for all accounting firms, you would type in “cpa” (without quotes). Notice all the other keywords associated with cpa? Now start targeting your audience.

Next download Google Monitor. Just enter your targeted keywords and website address into Google Monitor and it will tell you your placement in Google’s search results. Are you in the top 100? Is it time to change that?

And of course…don’t forget…

Mmmmm….suuushiiii.
