Yahoo’s Ridiculous Pay Inclusion Policy

I was searching the Yahoo Directory to find out how many website designers or agencies had their websites listed in the directory. Not many. I assume it’s because the Yahoo Directory doesn’t produce enough traffic to these sites to warrant an inclusion. Or maybe it’s because submitting your website - for $299.00 - doesn’t guarantee inclusion.

Yahoo Will Consider Your Website – For a Non-Refundable Fee

That’s right. Yahoo says you have to pay them $299.00 (USD) to be considered placement in their directory. Note, this fee is non-refundable and “does not guarantee a listing in the Yahoo! Directory”.

What is the point of paying if you’re website is not guaranteed a listing? I can understand if you had offensive content on your site and Yahoo wished not to include it. But the common sense approach, or the ethical/moral approach, would be to refund your money if they were not going to list your site. That’s not the case. The non-refundable fee you pay, to Yahoo, to be considered for placement in their directory is not guaranteed.

Are people actually paying this fee? By the look of the websites listed, not many.

Submit Your Website Elsewhere

There really isn’t any point to paying this kind of money just to be considered. With today’s search engines – even Yahoo’s – your website will be listed in the search engines eventually. And more people nowadays are using search engines - rarely directories.

If you want to submit, submit to Yahoo’s search engine – for FREE.

If you want to add your website to a directory, go to Open Directory Project. You can submit your site for FREE…and be considered.

Four Basic SEO Steps

Hello. Hope your weekend was filling.

Mine was. Most of this weekend I was putting the final touches on my Power Internet Search Engine Marketing seminar (whew that’s a mouthful).

There are many steps associated with getting your website higher in the search engines. Our process is about 10 steps - which is not too many - but to outline this many steps in a speech might put my audience to sleep. So I broke it down into 4 basic steps.

  1. Planning - Every task, even the smallest, needs to have a goal or objective. Basically, ask yourself, what is the purpose or objective of the website? Do you want people to make a purchase? Sign up for a newsletter, or just provide information?
  2. Research - It’s time to identify all the keywords that are relevant to your objective. With that list you’ll analyze your competitor’s keywords and keyword popularity to determine the best 2 or 3 keywords or phrases.
  3. Placement – You’ll have to add your keywords to the website copy, HTML, submit to the search engines and directories, and begin your link building/placement campaign.
  4. Measure – You’re not done. The only way to know if all of your efforts are worth it, you must measure your results. Inspect your website statistics, backlinks, website ranking and analyze website feedback. Know what is working and fix what is not.
Notice all of the steps are verbs - all action items. So take action and get your website found. Good luck in all your marketing efforts.

P.S. Today is the last day to register for our seminar. Don’t miss it.

The Contents of Your Homepage

I was just looking through a Nolo Press book about property agreements and noticed how fast I was able to find the information I was looking for.

Using the Table of Contents, I was able to quickly and easily find what I was looking for. It was arranged very systematically, similar, I thought, to how a website, particularly your homepage, should work.

How a Website Should Work

Your homepage is basically a table of contents of what you want to show your visitors. They scan for what they’re looking for, “click here” to proceed further and they’re done. This is how a website should work: Give me useful information quickly and easily.

Show your website visitors what you have to offer, present it in a logical fashion and notice the inquires and more contacts you receive.

From Contact to Conversion

Hello. Hope you had a good weekend.

Mine was pretty good. On Saturday evening I met with a client of ours for dinner at the New Zealander here in Alameda. Excellent food and company. We got to talking and Jim (our client) mentioned that he has received 3 new patients this week from his website. He said they all found him on Google.

This just goes to show that optimizing your website for the search engines can have a significant benefit and impact to your organization and bottom line. But what I thought was more important - even more important than getting more traffic to his website - is that the people who found Jim’s website trusted it enough to make the contact and call for an appointment.

A Trusted Website is a Profitable One

It’s one thing to get listed at the top of the search engines and receive more traffic to your website, but it’s another when those visitors become paying customers. Your website has to be trustworthy and credible enough before your visitors are going to think about making contact. There are a few simple ways to accomplish this credibility:

  1. Show the benefits of your service or product.
  2. Provide a real world feel. Include real life images, pictures of your staff, etc.
  3. Show your expertise and why your organization is unique.
It’s important to get your site higher in the search engines and thus more traffic to your website, but the ultimate goal is to convert that traffic into paying customers.

Have a great week.
