Make Up Your Mind With Yahoo’s Mindset
I was searching for a really old album (you know vinyl record) but Google’s search results were giving me mostly information about the album. I wanted to make a purchase.
And then I remembered Yahoo Mindset. With Yahoo Mindset you can analyze your search based on whether you’re shopping for an item or researching it (i.e. commercial or more informational).
I tried it and it did point me in the right direction most of the time. Granted it’s in beta mode, but it’s a start.
There will definitely be more of this kind of personalized search in the future. Search is all about relevancy and giving the searcher the best results possible.

Your Website Should Save Visitor’s Time
I’m setting up Skype. Skype lets you make free calls over the Internet. It’s free to download and you can add on voicemail for a weenie fee.
I went to download the software and they immediately provided installation instructions for my browser, Firefox. I checked the same link through IE (Internet Explorer browser) and was shown different directions specifically for IE. Pretty slick.
Skype recognized what browser I was using and displayed the directions accordingly. Most websites ask you first what platform you’re running and then give you the options to select.
Don’t Waste My Time
Skype utilizes a simple redirect for each user which saves us, the visitor, time. Though it may only be a few seconds of time saved, these seconds are critical on the internet.
Read “Don’t Make Me Think“, by Steve Krug and you’ll understand.
“…when I look at a Web page it should be self-evident. Obvious. Self-explanatory. I should be able to ‘get it’ – what it is and how to use it – without expending any effort thinking about it.” – Steve Krug
Your website has only a few seconds to attract and capture the visitor. (A new study says it’s even less than a second). Precious seconds trying to figure out your website will only aggravate your visitor into leaving your website possibly forever.
Don’t waste people’s time. It’s our most precious commodity.
P.S. I’ll let you know in future posts about my time with Skype.

Record Growth in Online Searches
I love statistics, especially statistics that confirm I’m in the right industry.
According to Nielsen//NetRatings, “The number of U.S. searches grew 55 percent in December 2005 over December 2004.”
Wow! That’s more than double; all the more reason to optimize your website for the search engines.
While actual searches grew, so did the search engines. “Google experienced 75 percent growth, Yahoo! Search went up 53 percent, and MSN Search increased by 20 percent”.
This data simply shows that more and more people are using search engines to find information. Are they finding yours?

I tell everyone, the easiest way to update your website yourself is to use Contribute.
Contribute allows you to easily update your own website without the knowledge of HTML (or knowing how to code). It’s simple.
- In Contribute, go to the web page you want to edit.

It really is that easy.
