Article: Profiting from Local Search
I decided to walk to the bank today to take care of some business. It's about 5 good blocks from our new office. What was so interesting about this walk is I realized how close I am to quite a few of my customers.
My route - depicted in the diagram below - included the following customers:

This is the beauty of living and doing business locally. The accessibility factor is incredible.
Market Your Website Locally
So too when marketing your website. Market locally. One of the easiest ways to get your website found and ranked higher on the search engines is to focus locally.
The Kelsey Group, a Princeton (N.J.) research company specializing
in
electronic media, predicts that local search volume will exceed 20 billion searches this year, representing about one-fifth of all web related searches.
Many retail or specialized service businesses find that most of their customers are local. If I'm looking for pizza, I'm not going to search in New York, I'm going to search here in my local town of Alameda, CA. If I need to find an attorney, I'll probably search locally. If I need a dentist or want to join a church, I will search locally.
Where Do I Start?
Below are a few websites to help get your website locally found:
-
Try Google Local. Are you listed? If not, sign up. Google has incorporated their local search results with their mapping system. The same results are delivered to mobile phone users too.
-
Sign up at Yahoo Local and MSN Local too. Don't forget AOL & Ask.com.
-
Are you in the Yellow Pages? Great. If not, add your business information to InfoUSA and Verizon's Superpages.com for free.
-
Check out CitySearch, Judy's Book and other local online directories.
The whole idea here is to get as much local internet exposure as you can. The more exposure, the more local traffic your website will receive and the more sales that can be made.
Market locally and enjoy the rewards.
